You rely on your home HVAC system to get you through the seasonally high temperatures that hit New York, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island during the summer. But lately you’ve noticed that the system isn’t cooling like it used to.
How do you know if you should call a repairman or start considering a replacement? In this blog, we list seven common warning signs that a cooling system has aged or worn out beyond fixing.
A significant decrease in air flow either means your filter needs cleaning or your unit’s compressor is on its last leg. Clean your filter regularly to remove debris.
If a cleaning doesn’t restore full air pressure, start thinking about installing a new unit once the compressor gives out.
Once your unit reaches a specific age, you’re more likely to begin experiencing the problems on the list. The typical ducted HVAC system lasts between 10 and 15 years.
Usually, you can overcome a major repair or part replacement. However, when these serious repairs occur later in the unit’s life, they serve as a warning of future issues.
If your unit needs a complex repair after the warranty expires, start shopping around for a new unit instead of pouring money into a dying system.
One of the most common problems in older or severely damaged units is that they produce regular air levels, but the air coming out isn’t cold. You may experience some warm air during regular use, but if your unit stops producing cool air entirely, consider a replacement.
This symptom may mean your unit has low refrigerant levels. However, warm air production can indicate a serious problem such as a damaged compressor.
For the most part, your unit should stay dry whether or not it’s in use. If you notice a sudden increase in condensation or an active leak, have the unit inspected by a professional.
When you have a leak, let a professional evaluate and diagnose the cause. Some units may spring refrigerant leaks. Refrigerant should only be handled by professionals due to the health risks it poses.
Some minor noise and scent changes can simply indicate the need for in-unit repairs. However, if you hear screeching, grinding or grating, the unit likely has parts out of place. If you catch the problem quickly, you may not need a replacement. But if the issue persists or reoccurs, replace the cooling system.
Foul odours usually mean that your unit’s insulation has become damaged or that the ductwork has become mouldy. Have your filter cleaned. If your unit is still smelly, consider a replacement.
If your unit seems to function normally, a major issue may manifest in your energy bill. If you notice a sudden spike, determine the source.
Compare your older energy bills against this one to determine if your unit has become significantly less efficient.
If you notice one or more of these warning signs, reach out to your trusted heating and cooling specialist. Depending on your current system, you may only need to replace the whole system. Or your chosen HVAC contractor may help you determine that a different system type will better meet your property’s needs
As your air conditioner ages, look for these warning signs that it’s time to move on or get caught in the next heatwave.
For many years, Hitech Central Air Inc. has carried out numerous replacements of existing systems – both the complete system and the machinery only, leaving the ducting and zoning in place. This we can do with reverse cycle, evaporative products and even wall-mounted split systems.
It is often the case that the ducting is in good condition, but the machinery itself has failed altogether or needs costly repairs. These parts may be expensive due to minimal availability and other associated costs. This is when the indoor unit (fan coil) and the outdoor unit (condenser) will need to be replaced.
In most instances, the replacement product has a higher output as an inverter, so it's improvement is not limited to the extra output alone. There is an added bonus in that the new machine is far more efficient and produces less noise. It’s a win on several fronts.
Have been sold throughout New York, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island over the years and these are now getting old and are either leaking water, rusting or not performing as they used to. The cost of repair is often not much less than having a new machine fitted. This is due to maintenance people over charging, so it’s not too hard to get a new product and have an improved performance with little maintenance compared to the old machine.
The old product often has rusted parts, leaking water and escaping air. When you add it all up, the performance is just not good.
